Tank Welding with the ArcBoss Top Hand MAX
As tank diameter increases, circumferential welding becomes more demanding. A 12-inch-diameter tank or pipe already has a circumference of more than three feet, and every increase in diameter adds more weld length.
Once the diameter gets above approximately one foot, welding automation begins to offer meaningful advantages. The operator must maintain the proper gun angle, stick-out, position within the joint, and relationship to the weld puddle for a longer period. Without support, the weight of the welding gun and leads can eventually force the welder to stop, reposition, rest, and restart the arc.
The ArcBoss Top Hand MAX Welding Manipulator supports and positions the welding gun during rolled-out circumferential welds. This can allow the operator to start the arc and complete the full weld without stopping simply because of fatigue or difficulty holding the gun in position.

Rolled-Out Circumferential Tank Welding
In a rolled-out welding application, the tank, pressure vessel, or pipe section is placed on powered pipe rolls. The rolls rotate the workpiece while the welding gun remains positioned at the joint.
The Top Hand MAX does not travel around the tank. It holds and positions the welding gun while the tank rotates beneath it.
This arrangement allows the operator to remain in one working position while monitoring the puddle and making powered corrections as needed.
